VCH RESEARCH INSTITUTE
SENT ON BEHALF OF VCH RESEARCH INSTITUTE

Purpose of this study:

Rehabilitation researchers want to learn more about using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) test to monitor recovery of brain function and thinking processes over time in individuals with a brain injury or stroke.

Who can participate?

We are looking for participants who are at least 19 years old, and have had a brain injury or stroke:
1) at least one year ago, are not receiving active rehabilitation, and are currently living in the community;
OR
2) within the last two months, and are receiving daily rehabilitation at the G.F. Strong Rehabilitation Centre.

What is involved?

Participants will be asked to complete the following assessments over two sessions:
- The MoCA: a short pencil-and paper test that evaluates thinking abilities. (administered twice)
- The Kettle Test: a functional task which involves making two cups of a hot drink (tea or instant coffee).
- The Symbol Digit Modalities Test: a measure of processing speed.

You will be asked general questions about your educational background and about your current living situation.

Each session will be booked for 45 minutes but participants may leave as soon as tasks are completed.

At each session, participants will receive $10 and up to $40 reimbursement for travel costs, if applicable.

When does this study take place?

Study enrollment will begin in November 2011 and end in January 2013. The last follow-up assessments will be completed by March 2013.

Where does this study take place/location?

Assessments will take place at the G.F. Strong Rehabilitation Centre or at a different, more convenient location, as determined between the participant and study investigator conducting the assessment.

This recruiting service, provided by the VCH Research Institute, saves study coordinators thousands of dollars and helps VCH remain an effective clinical trials site. The effectiveness of these emails has been measured and validated by clinical trial coordinators as a very important and effective way of reaching potential study participants. We try to list the subject line in such a way that it can be easily deleted by those who are not interested. Thank you.
