There are other peer-led programs designed and overseen by a professional. Building Life after stroke together was initiated and organized from our hearts. Success was magical. WHY?

Dear Potential Participant,
Re: Research Study - Operation COVID - Canadians’ Occupations during Viral Infection
Days: A New Normal?
We are writing to inform you of a study and to invite you to participate in a technology based oneon-one interview regarding our research topic. The purpose of this study is to capture the changes
in daily and social activities with the advent of COVID-19, how people are adjusting to these
changes and to identify potential solutions to address issues moving forward.
You are a potential participant for this study if:
- You can speak and understand spoken and written English
- You are a Canadian over the age of 19
- You have access to technology and Internet
Participation in the study is voluntary. If you choose not to participate, your care will not be
affected in any way. If you choose to participate, you will be asked to participate in a survey
and a 45-60 minute interview, with a researcher in an online platform called Zoom©.
The principal investigator of the research study, Dr. Bill Miller is a Vancouver Coastal Health
Research Scientist working at GF Strong and a professor in the Department of Occupational
Therapy at the University of British Columbia. Co-investigator Dr. Ben Mortenson is an
Occupational Therapist and Associate Professor in the department of OSOT at UBC. He has
training in gerontology and rehabilitation science, with a specialization in qualitative methods.
Co-investigator Dr. Jaimie Borisoff has a bachelor of applied sciences in engineering and sciences
as well as a Ph.D. in neuroscience from the University of British Columbia. He is also a adjunct
professor for the department of occupational science and occupational therapy for the university
of British Columbia. Co-investigator Holly Reid is an Occupational Therapist and recent graduate
from UBC. She has experience working in the field of mental health, and has experience collecting
and analyzing qualitative data.

Understanding the barriers and challenges to social participation for people living with stroke

Location: British Columbia Lower Mainland and Okanagan region

Recruitment period: Until July 2020

Description: The purpose of this study is to assess the physical and psychological capability, opportunity to socialize, and motivation to socialize of people living with stroke. Additionally, how factors such as depression, stress, and anxiety predict social participation will also be examined. The study will help increase the understanding of the barriers and challenges people living with stroke face around social participation. This in turn will inform future research to improve the development of new strategies and programs for stroke recovery.

Language: English (fluent)

Eligibility:
Adults 19 years and older who have experienced stroke
Living in the community
Medically stable
Able to provide informed consent

Participant requirements: Participants will meet with a member of the research team at either the GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre in Vancouver or UBC Okanagan. During the in-person meeting, participants will be provided with a questionnaire and asked about physical and psychological status poststroke, their opportunities and motivation to socialize, how often they socialize and the quality of their social participation. A cognitive assessment will also take place. Participation is required for between one and one and a half hours. Participants will be provided with $15 dollars to cover travel and parking expenses. Individuals who express interest in the study will have an opportunity to speak with a member of the research team by phone or email. All potential participants will be provided with an information letter, consent form, and have opportunities to ask questions.

Research Participants Wanted: Stroke survivors and partners

University of British Columbia Clinical Research Ethics Board,

Geography: British Columbia

Number of Participants: 100 total

Recruitment period: Summer 2019

Participant Criteria:

Stroke survivors and their partners (both partners are required to participate)
All ages
Must be proficient in English
Able to handle a device the size of a book and read newspaper size print
Able to walk at least 10 meters (with or without the help of a mobility device)

Project Description: The main goal of the study is to understand how partners may shape each other’s health behaviours like physical activity and diet after a stroke. Tablet-based daily questionnaires are used to monitor physical activity levels to capture daily spousal dynamics. In addition, cardiovascular risk markers are examined to explore potential links to spousal everyday health behaviours.

Participant Role:

Couple to participate in a 3-3.5 hour appointment to complete questionnaires and take basic health measurements, such as blood pressure, height, and weight, and be trained in using an iPad mini for the study.
For the next 14 days, participants wear physical activity monitors, complete short questionnaires on iPad minis, and take pictures of food and drinks.
During the 14 days, participants will provide a blood sample at their nearest local Life Labs.
Couple to participate in a final 2-2.5 hour appointment to conclude with questionnaires, cognitive tasks, and feedback.

Travel: Most sessions will be held on the UBC Point Grey campus. However, we are able to meet participants in a public space in their area, e.g., a local library. If participants feel uncomfortable in a public space home visits will be will accommodated.

Study Trials

FLOW trial actively recruiting patients
across Canada

The FLOW trial (FLuoxetine to Open the critical time period Window to improve motor recovery after stroke) is looking for individuals who had a stroke within the past seven months, are experiencing lower limb difficulties, and who do not have a clinical diagnosis of depression. The double-blinded placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial will examine whether a combination therapy involving exercise and fluoxetine can be effective in improving lower-limb motor recovery post-stroke over a three- to four-month period.

The study is led by Dr. Mark Bayley of Toronto Rehabilitation Institute and Dr. Janice Eng of the University of British Columbia, and is currently recruiting from multiple sites across Canada.

This is the first study launched on the new national stroke recovery clinical trialsinfrastructure developed with funding from CPSR and Brain Canada.

CPSR-funded AEROBICS update posted on Stroke Engine

Highlighting post-stroke fatigue

Fatigue is a major problem after stroke, affecting as many as half of all survivors. CPSR's Dr. Annie Rochette of the Universite de Montreal, director of the Stroke Engine website, recently participated in the development of a 40-minute French-language documentary on post-stroke fatigue. The documentary, which tells the stories of people living with post-stroke fatigue (pictured above), aims to highlight the issue and to provide coping strategies.
